The Perfect Assignment

You ever get an assignment that you swear you should be paying "them" for the pleasure of working?

This is my second season of working for a slow pitch league for a local corporation. It's a employee's, and family, only recreational league and there is a unwritten no-complaining rule. (they just play the game).

The best part is... the league is played at the companies rec center which just happens to be in a conservation area that has 3 very well maintained fields, a lake and a woods.

There are 3 of us that work the league and we have a little competition among ourselves, that the first person there gets choice of diamond. The "choice" diamond has a view of the lake and the woods.

And the best part is our favorite spectator. At about 6pm a Bald Eagle perches high on a power pole and watches. Actually he/she/it is watching the lake and if you're on the "choice" diamond every once in a while you get to see the eagle grab a fish out of the lake.

It's like going on a short vacation twice a week.

Yes, but only after the fact.

Junior high softball game (believe it or not!) Neither pitcher is overpowering, but both can throw strikes. Both defenses can field and throw the ball. Neither team can hit particularling well, but are capable of putting the ball in play.

Home team won 5-3. Completed 7 innings in 45 minutes! Had numerous inquiries in the following high school game if the junior high game had been cancelled since no one was on the field when the teams for the high school game arrived.

You aren't using that bald eagle to determine the height of the pitch, are you?

I've gone over to the Mississippi to see the eagles several times. They come down to Illinois when it's cold, so the best time to go is January. Some of the towns have Eagle Festivals.

Where the water flows over the locks and dams, the fish get knocked stupid and the eagles come down and pick them off. Amazing birds.
