Thanks for the rule on the resin bag. I have another question now.

On OBS.
Is the runner only protected between the bases the OBS occured?

R1 is on first.
Batter hits ball to F7
F4 OBS her on the way to 2nd.
R1 still makes it to 2nd but the throw from F7 is bad.
R1 heads to 3rd but is taged out.

Whats the ruling?
Is this enough information?

Most likely, this out is going to stand. That is because a judgment is made at the moment the OBS occurs where the runner would have reached had there been no obstruction. Subsequent playing action has no bearing to which base the umpire is protecting the runner. On a base hit to LF, R1 is only going to reach 2B, so that's as far as she is protected. Any further advance is at her own risk.

Let's change your play a little bit. Say the hit is to F9. It is quite plausible that R1, in the official's judgment, would have made it to 3B had their been no obstruction. In that case, she would be protected to 3B.

So just to be clear.
R1 made it to 2nd even though OBS.
When the error was made, either on the throw to 2nd or the catch/tag at second, The OBS was OFF and she proceded to 3rd at her own risk?

Speaking ASA, with RadioBlue on this one. The runner is protected to whatever base the umpire believed would have happened had the OBS not occurred at the time of the OBS. Subsequent plays are just that and should not affect the award/protection. Player always has the ability and right to attempt to go farther, but does so outside of the alloted protection.

Just to clarify, in most forms of softball, the obstructed runner has two types of protection:
1. protected between the bases where the obstruction occurred, AND
2. protected to the base the runner would have reached absent the obstruction.
Once a runner advances beyond BOTH of these protections, the runner is then in jeopardy again and may be put out.
