Dead Ball
Runners on 1st and 2nd no outs, fly ball down left field line, left fielder makes catch, momentum carries him into dead territory. Coach argues that runners should advance 2bases? Whats the correct call and mechanics?

I haven't umpired in awhile but I enjoy reading the forum. Isn't it only one base for unintentionally carrying the ball into DBT? Signal the out, signal the dead ball - award runners one base.

One base from the runner's position when the fielder stepped out of play

The coach would have been correct IF, in the umpire's judgment, the ball was INTENTIONALLY carried into dead ball territory.
Otherwise, the others are correct: one base from the moment the fielder stepped into dead ball territory.

Dave I haven't decided if I should call it from the dugout or the outfield. Apparently, both have really great views! Screw green, it ain't easy being blue! I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again. |
