Baserunning situation

Runner on third....batter hits ball to second base in the air...it is caught....the runner on third didn't tag and crosses home plate....realizes the ball was caught and runs back to third base directly without retouching home plate and makes it back safely....does the runner have to retouch home then third? Out?

What difference should there be with this situation compaired with R1 on 1st base. Rounding 2nd and on it's way to 3rd, then going straight back to 1st, almost via pitchingplate...
(This sit. was discussed somewhere last month, I believe)

Yes, you should have paid attention to two things:
1) Has the runner entered the dug-out (area)?
Y: Runner is out when appealed to on 3rd base
N: Runner can go back to 3rd base...

2) Has the runner touched all bases in reverse order?
Y: No problem, focus on ball beating the runner to it's base
N: Appeal on the missed base is requiered and start focussing on the ball beating the runner (or not)

So, don't even think about giving the out! Not before the appeal or the ball beating the runner.

(As answered above)
Runner must retouch home on her way back to third.
May not retouch if she has entered dead ball territory.

Only out if properly appealed...

I have a question on the appeal...

Obviously, if the ball beats the runner to 3B-OUT on that appeal.

What if the runner beats the throw to 3B, do I understand correctly that the appeal would then be to home plate?

Or can the runner be tagged?

The appeal is then to home plate. The runner can be tagged.

So I'll submit this one to you: what if the throw to 3B gets away, and the runner retouches 3B and then proceeds home? Is the runner still liable to be put out on appeal?

(This is a difference between baseball and ASA softball.)

The runner can be tagged as long as the fielder doing the tagging makes it clear she's appealing the miss at home, and not just tagging her.

I will take a stab and say that since the runner did not touch the plate on her way back to third and has since acquired 3B, she can no longer go back and touch home. She is out on appeal at the plate.

Don't know which set of rules I will be correct for though, if at all.

The way I read the POE, the appeal would stand.
