chest protectors

I am looking for a chest protector. any suggestions, my friend said he saw an umire with a bodygaurd chest proctector that was not as bulky as the others, but I have not been able to find one. Would anyone know where I can get one, I think the mfg. is out of bussiness.

"The Ump," which was made by Body Guard, was simply a foam pad that offers very little in the way of protection. And yes, they are no longer available as BG went out of business a couple of years back. If you want a chest protector that is good for all levels of ball, from 10U up to NCAA, might I recommend the Pro 9. It offers excellent protection and is still cooler than most "hardshell" CPs.

I'll second that on Pro 9 - takes a licking, fairly light, relatively cool....not too expensive for what you get...

I love my "Ump." My wife found a practically new one for me on eBay to replace the one I've used for 17 years. I've taken some shots and they've never hurt -- except if it caught the edge of the protector. I will grant you that there is no protection for the upper arm.

It offers no real protection for the clavicle or the shoulder area either, especially if you are working college ball. I had an All Star before my Pro 9, that was essentially a foam mat with a little hard shell protection for the shoulders, but it was quickly replaced when I took a shot off of a bat to the collar bone from a hard throwing college pitcher. I thought for a long while that maybe the clavicle was broken. I have since received similar shots and only been mildly fazed.

Has anyone seen both the Pro 9 and the Honig's K1 side by side? They look very similar, but a big difference in price.

I use the K1, and the rest of my plate gear, for all my softball and baseball games. I've done BB and SB from ages 9-18 with it and it works great for me.

One thing you shouldn't try is going cheap and buying whatever is lying around. The extra $20 you might spend could save you from a very expensive trip to the E.R.
