Fines for coaches in Ohio

Suspensions are appropriate and actually, keeping these people away from their team is one of the more painful penalties available. Can someone from this area let us know how bad it really is and how it got that way? It was once bad in the rec ball game around here, but it became so because the umpire's would take the abuse and those who did eject would "be the nice guy" and never report it to the adminstation. Then when teams would run into a better level of umpire, they couldn't understand why the umpire wouldn't take their crap and dump folks when they deserved it. If they have such a problem with ejections in this area, maybe the officials are partly to blame. This is where the "think skin" mentallity causes more problems for a group than the individual. Around here, it is pretty good at the HS level. A coach was ejected recently and it had been so long, the assignor had almost forgotten which forms needed to be submitted. |

Therefore, it is very possible a coach could be ejected by one official for something at which the next ninety-nine wouldn't even blink an eye. The second is that it seems this coach has a strange sense of what is fair. What happens to the officials is that they no longer get to work the big, important games, and very likely lose an opportunity for post-season. That is if they are indeed weak or vindictive. That means the official is, in effect, losing possible income and recognition. I think most officials would prefer a game-fee fine as opposed to the long term affect of a bad evaluation. |

Dave I haven't decided if I should call it from the dugout or the outfield. Apparently, both have really great views! Screw green, it ain't easy being blue! I won't be coming here that much anymore. I might check in now and again. |

The OhioHSAA membership is made up of both public and private schools. I cannot speak for the private schools, but I do not know of a single public school in Ohio where assistant coaches are not paid; assistant coaches are employees of the school district for which they coach. And yes, officials can and are fined by the OhioHSAA for certain infractions, which can range from double booking, failure to fulfill a contract, failure to file an player and/or coach ejection report, or wearing an improper uniform. Regarding the last two general examples the I gave I can give specific examples. An entire football crew was fined and denied post-season tournament assignments for one year because the crew failed to file an ejection report. Two soccer officials were fined $100 each five years ago for wearing yellow soccer officiating shirts when the the only approved shirts were the black with white collar and cuffs. The best part of the soccer officials infractions was the fact that the officials were from Columbus (OhioHSAA headquarters are located in Columbus), the game was in Columbus on the same side of town that the OhioHSAA offices are located, and OhioHSAA VIP from the state headquarters was in attendance at the game. As long as fines are handed out at the board level and there is an appeals process I have no problem with this. Umpires in our assoc can be fined in this way and I would hope it would spread to coaches.
