Leg Guards
For the first time I got hit directly on my ankle from a pitched ball that the catcher missed . Mens fastpitch .
I had padded boots and flaps over my ankle as I use the Honigs leg guards . It still hurt and I had to pull out of a spot on the diamond for a local tournament final . Now , as me stance is staggered my leg twists away from the right angle and I am exposed , so to speak . It occurred to me that maybe there is a brand of leg guard that has adjusted to the staggered stance and wraps further around the inside leg . The question is Is there such a leg guard ? |

Yep, there are several out there besides these two that do something similar. I know of an umpire who bought catcher's shin guards because of the ankle protection, then cut off the flap that goes over the top of the foot (and, the second time around, had an upholsterer sew the leather where he cut off said flap). Works for him, might work for you.

Just a thought (and I'm really not trying to be a smarta$$) - change your stance so you won't get hit.

I have the same problem and with all due respect Larry, some of us just don't fold that way.
I switched to the Gerry Davis guards They are reasonably priced and have a hard pad on the inside, but with mens Fastpitch it still hurt. At a discount sports shop I picked up a pair of soccer shin guards that have a hard plastic insert over the ankle bone pad. I wear the soccer guards under my Davis's and it works well. Its not cumbersome, has no effect on mobility and stops the pain. If you work in heat you will notice that you'll have to change socks after a game. |

I've been also hit on my ankle once in a FP men game. Was still a catcher those days, with extra protection on the ankles. Still it got swollen up and hurt a lot. Didn't walk or run then for two weeks.
On a direct hit with a speed over 100km/h the protection is minimum, I've experiënced... Bad luck can't be avoided. Debeau, still I'll hope you'll be back on the fields quick!

I need some new leg gaurds too and will get some once fall ball ends.. this is a few ideas maybe..
First, I keep my toes pointed forward just for that reason.. but in leiu of that, walmart sells some soccer shin guards that have hard ankle protection sleeves. The shin guard part separates from the ankle sleeve thingy and you can just wear them. 10 buck solution. I wore them a few games after getting hit in the ankle because of bruising.

Went over my stance and while my leg is exposed it is only slightly .
The bruise it left was deep seated about 1/4 inch across . Figured it was where the ball hit directly on the corner of the guard and banged that in just above my ankle . It didnt look much but wow when the bruising came out it was ugly . This hit was 1 in 10 thousand but as I told my wife " Hey I need new leg guards anyway " Her answer " Any excuse for new gear " what gratitude after she purchased new gear for her start into Umping . LOL We can go shopping together now |
