Yep, there are several out there besides these two that do something similar. I know of an umpire who bought catcher's shin guards because of the ankle protection, then cut off the flap that goes over the top of the foot (and, the second time around, had an upholsterer sew the leather where he cut off said flap). Works for him, might work for you.
