over officiating?...hmmmmm
Late Summer tournament, meaningful game. Bases are empty, with two outs. I'm the PU. Last at-bat and team B is mounting a comeback. A hard hit ball which the batter-runner tries to stretch into a double. She slides hard, and from my vantage point she beats the tag easily The BU, who has a 'rep' for being 'book', calls her out without hesitation, so I'm thinking dropped ball, but no, there it is. Third out, game over. The batter-runner breaks down on the way off the field. On our way off the field, I ask my partner about rhe play, not mentioning what I saw. He replies that yes she beat the tag, but while sliding into the bag field dirt came between her shoe and the bag, therefore, she wasn't legally touching the bag when tagged. I simply said, your call. What do my peers think about this?

Good grief. So he could see that there was dirt between every single cleat and the bag? Absurd. Run - run as fast as you can away from this moron.

As we were walking off the field, and seperated from the crowd, I quietly asked him what he had at second, thinking perhaps that I might have missed something. and the conversation was limited to the question, and there wasn't a great deal of conversation, certainly not enough to arouse any suspicion, that's for sure.
That umpire is one who when questioned recites the book verbatim, to the point where it becomes tedious. I am an umpire who likes to let the game flow, and doesn't look for anything, because I know that as soon as I do, I'll find more than I anticipated. With a situation like that one, all kind of things enter your mind. |
