Batter 13 hits a ground ball to F5 . Batter 13 is clearly pass the double bag at first base but did not touch either bag. F5 throws the ball to F3 and she steps on the white bag at first. Is this still a force out or does F3 need to touch Batter 13 with the ball.

The runner is safe at this point. To get an out, the fielder needs to make an obvious appeal of the missed base before the runner returns to first base. Once the runner does return, it's too late for an appeal.

![]() The defense must make a live ball appeal by tagging the R before she returns to the base (either i using a double base) or, with possession of the ball tag the white portion of the base AND giving some indication of an appeal for the R missing the base.
