Politics..............
First of all, I did not realize the person in question was a state UIC. If he wants to "get back at me," have at it. I've done my share of "dogsh!t" assignments, so the "threat" of them is no threat...

"Dead ball" vs. "Time..."
Some of those pro school instructors can be characters. I went to the (then) Bill Kinnamon Umpire school in 1981. Our instructors were Bill, the late John McSherry, Joe Brinkman, Larry Young, Dan...

Sooner or later.........
Sooner or later, every umpire retires (or quits). You lose the desire, or you physically can't do it anymore. I know I'm on the "downside" of my umpiring career, but I'm not ready to give it up just...

Delay in calling "time....."
Irish - How can that be "over officious?" I delayed calling "time" for TWO reasons:
1. To give the runner the OPPORTUNITY to retouch 1st
2. To give the defense an OPPORTUNITY to make a live ball...

Clinics & camps.............
Bret - A good weekend overall for you. Our association clinic isn't until the latter part of March (we usually have it in January), so I still have a about another 6 weeks to wait.
I try to learn...

Parents...............
Irish - Some "parents" these days SHOULDN'T BE PARENTS. What are you saying - if a "parent" allows their child to play a softball game with large, hoop earrings on, you are going to allow it?

Details..............
Thanks, Cecil. I was stationed at Ft. Ritchie, Maryland when I started in 1978. This was when we did 2-man mechanics, there was NO "foul ball 3rd strike" rule then, and the pitching arc was judged "3...

Jewelry..........
It is left up to the umpire's judgment whether it is considered "dangerous" or not. For sure, I am NOT going to let a 13-year old wear "hoop" style/pierced earrings on to the field. If someone makes...

Blue vs. red............
First, I offended some with my bold type. So, I stopped that.
Now, it appears I offend when I put ASA in red instead of blue.
What if I just kept it in black?

Protests...........
I don't have a problem with protests either. But, I emphasize to my fellow umpires that they must go on the field with a good "working knowledge" of the rules and if needed, go to the rulebook to get...

Seth - Same here with our Men's league. Most of them wear jewelry of one kind or another. Now, in ASA SP "jewelry don't play." We've discussed this at-length during our association meetings. We've...

Well said, Seth. Umpiring is not for everybody. To be a successful ump, you've got to have the right mindset, training and desire. I've been with my current association for 3 years now. Having been...

Live vs. dead............
It's been years since I've done FP, but I do remember that one "unwritten edict" is KEEP THE BALL LIVE. Now, I'm strictly an ASA SP umpire. The pitched ball is dead as soon as it hits the ground. So,...

NC - Too many (mostly younger) umpires get flustered when a coach says that 7-letter word "protest." That's why it is important ALL umpires know what can - and cannot - be protested.
I had a coach a...

Welpe - To help get you up-to-speed:
We won WWI, WWII and the first Gulf War.
Korea was a draw.
We lost Vietnam.
Gulf War II is still a toss-up.
