Ball hits runner

This thread is intended to bring out discussion about the difference if any between a base runner being hit by batted ball in fair territory, and a base runner being hit by a fair batted ball, but in...

What is umpire expected to do?

In many years of coaching at all levels and venues, I can't recall ever having seen an umpire inspect a bat when a batter comes up to bat. What I have seen, of course, is umpires inspecting the bats...

Mfgr Certification

Well, around here in Central Calif, it has been a requirement for ASA tournaments for a couple of years now that all batters come up to bat wearing a helmet with NOCSAE certification on the helmet...

That Makes Sense...But

It might have been a good idea to put the exception into the coach's edition of the rule book so we would know what to tell our catchers and batters about bunting, especially since the rule and the...

Thank you.

Page 233 of my 2004 ASA rule book has to do with Council Meetings, but if you say there is an exception in the Umpire's Manual or somewhere, that's good enough for me.

Can you cite a rule?

[QUOTE=Steve M]$-Seam,
Yes, you are missing something. This wreck with the batter-runner and catcher is the exception. As Mike said, as long as both B-R and F2 are doing what they should be doing,...

ASA Rule 8-2-f

ASA Rule 8-2-f says a batter-runner is out when the batter-runner interferes with a fielder attempting to field a batted ball. Per Definitions, the catcher is a fielder. In the post, isn't the...

Unsportsmanlike Conduct

This expression is sometimes mentioned in this and other rules forums, but after searching the ASA rule book I cannot find this expression anywhere in the book. The closest I can find is Rule...

If it was ASA 10U, then I'm not impressed with the base runner illegally trying to come home home from third base on a passed ball.

Tie Breaker Runner on Second Base

ASA tournament, tied game goes on to eighth inning. As each team goes on offense, umpire asks scorekeeper who made the last out in seventh inning and places that player on second base. Umpire is...

Too many infielders?

ASA Tournament. Coach of 10U.
To my eye, the field seems to have an abnormally large distance from home skinned. I have my outfielders playing on edge of grass for first several batters, then...

Here is a quote from NCASA Ump in thread about possible interference by runner running from 2nd to 3rd:
"Interference is the act of an offensive player that hinders the defensive player's ability...

I agree with your interpretation, which I read to mean that by making the runner do anything other than run across the plate and step on it, the catcher has impeded the runner, therefore obstruction...

After the sign has been given

The defensive coach will always be free to move F3 after the sign has been given...the question is about delaying the game while F3 plays games with the coach at third base by blocking the view.

Do your job

As a coach for many years, I expect umpires for a varsity league game to enforce the rules, including the rule that on defense no coaches are in LBT.

One time playing at a field where the dugout...

I should have made it more clear that in the actual case, the batter-runner ran into the ball several feet from the batter's box so that was not the issue.

Proper Appeal

This thread relates to Irish Mafia's thread about a batter-runner failing to touch the orange part of a double base, but I'd like to ask a broader question about appeals.

The question is what...
