Despite the beliefs of many, gold trim is not reserved soley for military veterans. I've yet to see a Federal statute or policy stating such though I have heard of it being the policy of some official's associations.

The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

Well then there's that, which seems to indicate to me we shouldn't be wearing patches at all but that's not a fight that's worth fighting IMO.

I bought the flags on my uniform directly from the American Legion store (their HQ are here in Indy). They made sure I got the right sleeve flag and gave me the one with gold piping even though I never identified myself as a veteran. Based on that I assume it's OK to wear them on our uniforms and use the gold trim.
