Spot for Intentional Grounding

Team A, 3rd and 7 from their 6. QB drops back to the 3, not seeing anyone open and B player closing fast throws the ball into an area not occupied by a receiver.

Flag for intentional grounding.

Half the distance from the 3, loss of down, 4th and 11-1/2 from the 1-1/2.

LJ blows whistle and questions whether the enforcement spot should be the previous spot since last play was a pass play.

Question. Intentional grounding is a running play for an illegal forward pass, or, should it be a loose ball play making enforcement spot the previous spot?

5 yards from spot of the penalty and loss of down

in your case half the distance.

CANADIAN RULING:

Situation changed to 2D since we only have 3 downs.

LD @ PF. Gives 3D/10 @ A-3.

For forward passes, loose ball plays only include LEGAL forward passes. Illegal forward passes are classified as running plays so the spot of enforcement would be where the run ends.

As mikesears said it's a running play. But, forget that for a moment. Even if it was loose-ball play the spot of the foul occurred BEHIND the basic spot so the enforcement is the same place (the 3) no matter what.

All But One: Foul behind the basic spot. Half the distance from the 3 and LOD.

Not true, Forks. An illegal forward pass is a running play. The basic spot is the end of the run.

Walt, my bad. I was thinking end of run (in this case) and foul by offense behind the basic spot were the same. They are in terms of the spot (in this case), but in terms of definition of the foul, they are not. Thanks for the correction.
