Try working high school games with 4-man . Now that is just plain awful.
Love to hear the stories about 5 and 6 man mechanics. Us poor suffering souls on Long Island still do it with four.

we use six man in georgia. it is easier than five or four to me. if you know the proper mechanics, you have no toubles, and it is less running. i have used seven in college. we will probably start using it in high school in a couple of years.

God bless you.

Our BJ went down in the 2nd qtr of a varsity game 2 years ago. So of course, both teams decide they're going to play Spurrier ball in the second half. Being a wing, that was not fun.

In fact, I believe that's most, if not all, of NY. Certainly that's what we've got up here around Albany, and it sounds like Theisey might have the same a bit downstate from us.

As far as I know, only Section-I uses 5 officials on a regular basis. I'm in section-IX and it's a rarity to have a school request that additional official.

Yes. Section 1 had 5-man crews in almost 50% of the Westchester games last year. The number has been growing each year.

How it is decided to add the fifth man to a game?

The schools (at our urging) ask for the 5th and in some cases a timer. All 5 on the field get paid a full fee. There is a separate timer fee. We started this about 5 years ago and the numbers increase each year.

I don't have any experience with 6-man or know of any using this mechanic in our area.
In Oklahoma we use 5-man mechanics on every varsity class level except 8-man games, which is 4-man mechanics. With today's passing games this is sometimes difficult to get all the eligibiles accounted for. I would think that a 6-man crew would have a little easier time of it. Currently there is a push to cover the semi-finals and championship games with a 7-man crew. After working some college, 7 is the way to go. Man, that is sweet!
BTW, we use 4 on sub-varsity games.
