rules for eyeshields?
i know that the new rule for ncaa division I and II are that you cannot wear a visor at all unless you have a doctors note, and on top of that you cannot wear any type of tinted or mirrored visor it must be completely clear! i would like to know does anyone have information on if that applys to NAIA and division III? and why the heck would they make a rule like this after all these years of it not being an issue? is there saftey hassards to this object on the helmet that is supposed to protect the eye, (hits, sunglares, etc). please someone give me some answers

Eyeshields are not illegal based on the new rule change for 2006. Clear eyeshields were (under 2005 rules) and still (under 2006 rules) will be legal.
All non-clear (mirrored or tinted) eyeshields will be illegal without exception. Waivers will no longer be allowed for use of non-clear shields. This is and always has been a safety concern since you cannot see a players eyes behind a non-clear shield. |

All eye shields need to be 100% clear, regardless of the division or college organziation you play in. They all play under NCAA rules.
As for the rationale behind the rule, yes, it is a safety issue. Members of the medical staff want to be able to see your eyes in case of injury. You mention unscrewing the facemask in order to see the eyes, I'm not a doctor, but I have to imagine that in the process of unscrewing the mask, your head/neck would be moved around quite a bit and we all know that isn't a good situation. My question is, besides fashion/appearance, what benefit is there to using a tinted eyeshield? Some might say to keep the sun out but if that is really an issue, you can use eye black, wear tinted glasses under your helmet, or use a tinted contact that limits light.

Canadian Ruling
Clear eyeshields are permitted no questions asked.
Tinted shields are permitted only if the kid presents the league with a doctors note.
