3rd and 20 from the A-1 yard line, 2 seconds remaining in the 2nd quarter. A1 hands to A3 who tries to run the ball. A2 is flagged for holding in their own endzone. A3 runs the ball out to the A-7 yard line. The clock expires during the down.
Options for B? 4th and 10 from the K-5. K1 punts the ball high and short. R1 signals for a fair catch. K2 runs into him before the catch is made. Time expires for the quarter during the kick. R wants an awarded fair catch to attempt a free kick for a field goal. Is this allowed? [Edited by mikesears on Jul 22nd, 2005 at 08:37 AM]

Accept and earn a safety. (8.4.1a.1) Option to end the period (unlikely), or extend the period for one more play. (1.5.6) If extending the half for one play, continue as after any safety. (3.2.3)

Play 1: Decline - ball goes to the A-7, and the half is over; or Accept - safety, 2 points for B, and the period is extended for an untimed free-kick.
Play 2: Accepting an awarded fair catch is considered the same as accepting the yardage penalty. Assuming that the penalty took place in or beyond the neutral zone...R's ball, and they may free kick from the spot of the awarded fair catch during an untimed extension of the period. |

1) B may decline the penalty and it would be half time. Or they can accept the penalty and get the safety. Then we extend for one untimed down for the free kick.
2) We have kick catch interference. One of the options under that penalty is an awarded fair catch at the spot of the foul. Because of the foul during the last timed down we will extend for one untimed down. Because the untimed down will be the first play after the awarded fair catch a free kick for a field goal is allowed. |

For 1):
After the safety, A is then forced to free kick on an untimed down. Is there any reason why the kicker couldn't just tap the ball 1 yard with his foot and fall on it, ending the period? While this would be a first touching violation, that still should allow the period to end rather than taking a chance for a long return for a score. Seems like it could work. |
