Deadball USC

A's ball on B30. A10 takes the handoff and runs for a TD. After the TD, A4 taunts B35. The choice is presented to the captains and they choose to take the USC on the kickoff instead of the try. The ball is spotted and prior to the ready for play, the captain changes his mind and wants it on the try.

Do we permit the change?

I don't know that the NFHS has addressed this anywhere. With that being said, once I give the signal and spot the ball, no, I'm not allowing a change.

Would there ever be a situation in which a choice is taken, the ball made RFP, & then the captain's change of mind is honored? Why would it be in this case?

Once it's made RFP, I'm not allowing a change to the coach's decision.

The captain's choice of options may not be revoked.
Fairly cut and dry, isn't it?

D'oh! I missed the word "prior". But in a case like this, there wouldn't be much time between when the ball is spotted and the RFP signal given -- and there probably would be a considerable time between when the initial choice was stated and the ball spotted.

Except I haven't asked a captain in over a decade.

I've let coaches who clearly didn't understand change their minds before the RFP.

As ALWAYS, no 2 situations are ever EXACTLY alike, so YOU get to decide if the specific situation you may be dealing with, is worthy of arguing about?
