Conflict of Interest?

Back in the saddle again after a couple years away!
Now have varsity boys in an 8 team conference.

My question is, would any of you hesitate taking a game in this conference if your brother was head coach in this conference? (Not any of HIS games, but others?)

No. People will find anything to complain about if they will suggest this is a conflict of interest.

Peace

Nope...just don't work his games. And maybe, in the last week of the season, no games that would affect his team's seeding/play-off possibilities.

Agree with the first two responses, and I'll add the obligatory 3rd response: talk to your assigner(s), if you have them... the assigner(s) might have a different opinion.

Talking

I think you should take as many of his games as you can. Then you can use your calls to show him that Mom always liked you best.

When he complains about your calls, tell him he didn't buy foul insurance.

maybe for playoffs if your brother's team could face the winner. most of it should be fine if your assignor is good with it.
and to add, exactly what Mark said. And bring up bad past presents he gave you. and if he has kids tell them they are ugly too.

I don't think that these two guys are the Smothers Brothers.

I saw the Smothers Brothers at a show in Vegas back in the 60s. The opening act was Carol Burnett. It was a dinner show and I laughed so hard I almost upchucked my food.

Of course, that happened many times when working games with certain coaches.

How big is the local area? Are there other leagues to work or would an official have very little to do if he didn't take other games in this league?

That would be a factor in my mind if I were the conference assignor or supervisor.

Agree...if there are 100 schools you be assigned to and avoiding his lead eliminates 8, then it might be a good idea. However, if there are 15 schools in the area, I'd draw the line differently. It isn't so much the presence of an actual conflict but the appearance of a conflict. We don't need to create any more suspicion than necessary. It is quite possible that, near the end of the season, you could be on a game that, while it doesn't involve his team, may have a direct impact on final standings and playoff implications.

Avoid the conflict

I no longer coach basketball but I am the head coach for two other sports so I have the assignor block out any games my school is in and all varsity games for the schools in our district. I still work JV and 9th/10th grade games since they have no bearing on post-district play. The coaches at the other schools are ok with that. Its a good way to work games in the area while avoiding a conflict of interest.

I retired from my home town school system about ten years ago. I taught science, and coached soccer, and basketball, at the middle school. My three kids participated in various high school sports, including basketball. They graduated about ten years ago. I've blocked off my hometown high school for the past nine years. I unblocked the high school for this season, after asking, and then getting the blessing, of my assigner. The boys basketball coach, the girls basketball coach, and all their assistants, as well as the athletic director, have all moved on.

Just so all knows, he is one of the top officials I have ever played under and I would NEVER think he would do anything remotely shady. But what I think and what others may think are 2 different things.

There is one conference with 3 (8) team divisions. Plenty of work to go around.

Just was curious to what this group thought. Thanks for the comments!
