Back when I played it happened to me nearly every game. Hard to shoot that second one after taking a shot to the groin area during the follow through of the first shot.

Possible on the rare occasion where there is a jump shooter at the line.

Still not likely, but possible.

If allowed on a first shot attempt, it can have an affect on the free thrower's ability to shoot the next without undue concern.

There was already a rule to deal with that if it was a problem .. a foul.

Actually, under the new rule there is less potential for illegal contact on the free throw shooter b/c B3 gets a head start and can position himself squarely in front of A1 before A1 can move.

Under the old rule, both would be moving at the same time.

In fact, the only time I've ever had to deal with it was in a Summer league game with HS rules. On the first of 1-n-1, B3 hip-checked A1 but I wasn't paying attention and caught the reaction of A1 being displaced. On the next free throw, B3 attempted the same thing and A1 caught him with an elbow. B3 looked at me for relief and I told him "That's what you get" and headed down court.

That is why I posted the original question. When I played in the 90's I didn't even know that there was a restriction on anyone other than the shooter when it came to breaking the free throw plane.

The restriction ended in 1997-98, when we switched back to the "hit".

(Note: I've been through hit, release, hit, and release, in my thirty-four year career.)
