I bounce the ball to the free throw shooter, who takes a few dribbles and bounces it off his shoe. The ball rolls to the sideline.
Since this was not intentional, all I should do is retrieve the ball and let him re-shoot, right? Also- hasn't the NFHS officially said no more congratulating a free throw shooter after each shot (high five from the teamate in the lane, etc.)? I'm assuming this would be a delay warning and a subsequent Technical thereafter... |

There is a casebook play on the first play you describe, and you handled it correctly
There is rule and casebook that state no congratualting players on FT. It is a pain in the butt to enforce and cause and in my opinion causes more heartburn than its worth. What I do if they do it is just tell them we are playing and bounce the ball to the shooter..and get the ball in play. Never had a problem yet... |

Free throw shooter
champ,
I've had this happen at least twice this year already. Your case book reference is 9.1.1 which states: A1, at the free throw line to attemp a free throw (a) muffs the pass from the official and it rolls forward; or (b) accidently drops the ball before the throwing motion is started. RULING: In (a) and (b) the official should sound the whistle to prevent any violations and then start the free throw procedure again.
