Team control ends under NBA rules when the defender knocks the ball away.
So the play you describe was not a violation in the NBA.
However, it would have been a violation at the NFHS and NCAA levels.
I believe that people watching NBA games on TV and seeing this action not penalized get upset and cause a problem when it is whistled against Johnny in a HS game.

The NBA has team control and also team possession definitions which explains how team control can end without resetting the shot clock.

Correct.

Team control ends on a defensive deflection or there's a FG attempt.

Team possession ends when there's a FG attempt that hits the rim or the other team gains possession of the ball.

Team possession is important for the shot clock, as yous stated above, and for the 8 second backcourt count.

The rule should be the same at the HS level. Ours is a terrible rule that's lasted for far too long.
