NBA backcourt
Is the NBA backcourt rule the same as NFHS?
A1's pass in the frontcourt is deflected by B1, then subsequently deflected by A2, all still in the frontcourt, then recovered by A2 in the backcourt. violation If the rule is the same, they missed it at the 1:30 mark in the 4th quarter tonight. Official gave the tipped ball signal. |
Not the same.
Team control ends under NBA rules when the defender knocks the ball away. So the play you describe was not a violation in the NBA. However, it would have been a violation at the NFHS and NCAA levels. I believe that people watching NBA games on TV and seeing this action not penalized get upset and cause a problem when it is whistled against Johnny in a HS game. |
Nevada is correct. Team control ends upon a defensive deflection in the NBA.

Team control ends on a defensive deflection or there's a FG attempt. Team possession ends when there's a FG attempt that hits the rim or the other team gains possession of the ball. Team possession is important for the shot clock, as yous stated above, and for the 8 second backcourt count. |
