Jump Ball

On the center circle jump ball at the beginning of the game, when can the players move?

A. When the ref tosses the basketball it in the air.
B. When a player tips the basketball in the air.

Different restrictions for different players, depending upon their locations.
1. The players not within three feet of the circle can be moving the entire time and do not have to be still or hold any specific spots.
2. A player within 3ft may back away from the circle at any time.
3. The non-jumpers may not penetrate the circle prior to the ball being tapped, but may move "onto" the circle (meaning into a space within three feet of it) as soon as the ball is tossed.
4. Jumpers may not leave the circle until the ball is tapped.

Which is why I hate it when the referee (or his designated tosser) makes the general statement, to everybody, ""Hold your spots".

I only say that when one (or both) of the teams is nicknamed the Leopards.

The number of times the "hold your spot" comment is made at the start of my games - HS and NCAAW - has annoyed me for years.
