Illegal subtitutions
During the 1st quarter the visiting team notifies the official scorer that they had three players (A9, A10, and A11) that showed up late that weren't in the book. I explain that we can add them but the cost is a T. However if they don't play there is no penalty. (I went over this with the coach as well).
A9, A10, and A11 play the last minute of the 2nd quarter. The table doesn't notify us that these are the three that weren't in the book. During halftime the official scorer explains that A9, A10, and A11 were the three that were missing in the book and the three that just checked in. She also notified us that she had already added their numbers to the book as well. This is similar to 3.3.3 Sit C however the difference is that the official scorer already made the change to the book. What would be the correct ruling at this point? |

Bob: How do you not penalize the adding of names to the Scorebook after the time limit? MTD, Sr.

Check with your state association about this. If there is a maximum quarters of participation per/day/season rule they may want you to have the players entered and penalized according to or regardless of the NFHS rule.

OhioHSAA has such a rule, but that has not bearing in this situation. The players' quarters count. The question is Team A (Visitors) charged with an Administrative TF for the adding of A9, 10, and A11's names and numbers to the Scorebook after the rule imposed time limit. An Administrative TF must be charged to Team A when the infraction is discovered. MTD, Sr.

10.1.2, Mark. In my situation a jv player entered the varsity game with just a few seconds left in the second quarter. He wasn't in the book and it wasn't noticed until the quarter ended. According to NF there was nothing we could do; but we had to consider the state rule for qtrs. played. We added the name and assessed the penalty to start the 3rd q. OHSAA said that was correct by them.

10.1.2 is (almost) the exact play. Too late to penalize once the ball becomes live.
If Ohio (or any other state) wants to change that -- okay; but be clear about that when asking the question. Personally, I would not call the foul later -- they are in the book, so mark it so the quarters can be counted, and go on with the game with no T. |
