Throwing at wrong basket
G/V. A1 starts the 2nd half and takes off the wrong direction and she drives in for an uncontested layup at the opponents basket. She misses and secures the ball. This is a travel. There was no whistle. (arghh) She then shoots again and makes it.
The problem here is I was the lead on the initial throw in and I'm now 90 feet away. Both partners are about to let B1 throw the ball in when I blow my whistle. From 90 FT away how would you make a traveling call?

This is not a travel. Actually, it's an illegal dribble. I probably wouldn't attempt to call that from where you were in a varsity game, but if you see the wrong team inbounding the ball kill it no matter where you are.

Could have also been a back court violation depending on where team control was established. JAR is correct that this is an illegal dribble not a travel.

Correct. Illegal dribble. No backcourt. A through directly to A1 in the backcourt and off she went. Since I did stop play to keep wrong team from inbounding would it be wrong to give the nearer official a quick rules reference and let him make a very late illegal dribble call?

It could be both if she jumped to take the "shot". That would be starting a dribble after lifting the pivot foot. Either way, it is a violation.

In fact, it would only be an illegal dribble if it hit the backboard. Otherwise, it is a travel.

The only thing different in this case play is that it happened to be over the head of an opponent...but we all know that is only for illustrative purpose and it isn't really related to the ruling.

So let me get this straight. None of you would make this call from 90 feet away even though it obviously cost the team 2 points when it clearly should not have?

Maybe it was a fumble. Maybe she never ended her dribble on the first shot.

I am probably trying to get my partner's attention to see if s/he wants to discuss this, but I'm not barging in. And, I'm clearly NOT making the call from 90 feet away.

If it's a High School game on a high school court, then it's not 90 feet away ... go get it!

I've made this call as L from the division line with my P right there by the basket. That was awkward enough, I'm not getting this from 90 (or 80)

Can you always call a travel or illegal dribble when a player takes a shot at the wrong basket?

Travel: Not if A1 nevers moves his/her pivot foot.

Illegal Dribble: Not if A1 has not previously used their dribble.
