In my first year, an experienced official took great care to explain to the captains that if they made the "T" signal with their hands, he would give them what they asked for.

Wow.

I simply ignored it and usually followed it with a whistle for travel that was almost guaranteed to follow. It never felt right and I hated it but the rule was clear. I was glad when they made the visual request a valid way to request a timeout.
