Time-Out Requests

Player A1 has the ball and is jumping in the air out-of-bounds and verbally requests a time-out. Regarding NFHS rules, this time-out request should be granted correct?

Yep, no restrictions in HS ball.

Back to the Future

Was there ever a time in NFHS where only players could call time-out during live play?

Yes, I believe so.

Maybe 10-15 years ago. I forget when they changed it.

Yep.

I played HS ball in the late 70's - early 80's, and that was the rule then. Coach would yell at us to "Call a time-out" and then we would have to make the request to the officials.

Not only that but the request had to be verbal. There was no visual signal that was recognized as timeout.

In my first year, an experienced official took great care to explain to the captains that if they made the "T" signal with their hands, he would give them what they asked for.

Wow.

I simply ignored it and usually followed it with a whistle for travel that was almost guaranteed to follow. It never felt right and I hated it but the rule was clear. I was glad when they made the visual request a valid way to request a timeout.

It seldom occurs, but sometimes, the "good old days" really are the good old days. This brings a tear to my eye. Stupid NFHS rule changes.
