Offensive Foul and Count the Basket (Video Added)
Two plays from Austin.
8:15 or so remaining in first half of Miami vs. Pacific. Offensive foul called on Miami but looked like basket should have counted as well. It was a 15 foot jump shot. 12:10 or so remaining in first half of Illinois vs. Colorado. Offensive foul on Illinois and they counted the basket. Have no idea if scoring the basket was correct but offensive foul was. Both calls were from the lead official. |

The first one looks like the official got the basket portion wrong. I am not even totally convinced the charge was correct (technically).
The second one was really close, I mean razor thin close when it comes to the basket counting. I think that was a solid charge call too. Peace

Help Me Out Here
Is NCAA different from Fed regarding airborne shooter committing a player control foul?

The last time I was a statistician at NCAA games, NCAA-M rules do allow for the possibility of a good basket and a foul committed by the shooter.
The women's rule, I believe, matched up with NFHS. Is this still the case in NCAA?

They might as well make the charge call the same as HS. On the rare occasion that a player does release before contact, it usually surprises the officials and they rarely get it right. Maybe next year the NCAA will let them go to the video for that too. :-)

Yes - still the case in NCAAM.

Don't Worry, Be Happy ...
That was the NFHS rule thirty years ago. One coach is happy because the basket counted. The other coach is happy because the official called the foul. It was a win, win situation. Mark T. DeNucci, Sr. and I are probably the only Forum members that remember utilizing this rule in a NFHS high school game.

Winning (Charlie Sheen) ...

If the officials do this quick enough, the coaches won't have time scratch their heads and to figure out if they're pissed at the officials, or not, so I guess that it's, at the worst, a winning situation for the officials. Note: It was a long time ago so I could be wrong, but don't recall this happening very often. Usually the "offensive" contact was before the release.

I wish I could count the many times a coach claims we should count the basket in a HS game. So I am not sure they would be shocked if that happened. Then again these are coaches we are talking about.
Peace
