Crew was Garretson, Kirkland, Roe.

Kirkland began refereeing in 1994 and moved to the NBA in 2000.

Kirkland failed to block Humphries' shot but did succeed in stopping him from shooting the ball; his goal, it seems, was to allow substitutes into the game. It’s unclear why it would matter if Humphries attempted the free throw or not if play was already whistled dead but Kirkland delivered the laughs anyway.

The exchange occurred with 7:42 remaining in the fourth quarter and the Nets leading 81-68. Humphries finished with 11 points and two rebounds on one-for-one shooting from the field. He hit nine of his 10 free throw attempts, including the attempts immediately before and after Kirkland’s block attempt.

Ref tries to block Humphries’ free throw

Found 8 hours ago on Larry Brown Sports:
PLAYERS: Kris Humphries, Dikembe Mutombo
TEAMS: Brooklyn Nets, Toronto Raptors

From Larry Brown Sports:

NBA referee Courtney Kirkland treated us to one of the more humorous moments of the season when he got a little too aggressive while trying to stop Kris Humphries from attempting a free throw.
The Brooklyn Nets forward was at the line to shoot free throws in the fourth quarter against the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night when Kirkland sprang in out of nowhere and tried to give him the Dikembe Mutombo treatment.
According to The Brooklyn Game, Kirkland was just trying to prevent Humphries from shooting before a substitute entered the game. Humphries made both his attempts and finished with 11 points in the Nets’ 94-88 win. We’re thinking Kirkland could have used a subtler method.

Undignified.

How about he blow the whistle and wave off the try?

Instead he looks like a circus act.

Who is training these guys?

I'm sorry but that is hilarious.

The wrong way to handle it, but hilarious nonetheless.

Bizarre is a better word. Why the he11 wouldn't a professional official not just rely on the primary tool of his trade (whistle) to control this situation? My guess is the supervisior of officials had a serious discussion with him about his actions.

Well yeah, it's bizarre. That is a given. Him leaping into the air with an arm outstretched is still funny by itself.

The most bizarre thing about that video is seeing a team called the "Brooklyn Nets". What's next - the Dodgers also moving back there?

Maybe Kirkland is Kim K.'s newest boyfriend.

What an idiot!

Add this to the ref who wanted to start a "tug-o-war" over the ball in a Portland game recently, this hasn't exactly been a good week for the NBA Officiating Staff.

David Jones had the ball and a player tried to rip it from him. Guess you let that happen in your games.
