2 Man Mechanics Training

Hey All,

I have to train people to officiate basketball in 2 man mechanics that have never officiated before. As it has been a while since I have had to work 2 man mechanics, and even longer since I have had to train people with no previous basketball experience, I was wondering if anyone has any training materials or websites that might be helpful to me. I would appreciate any help I can get.

JRutledge is the man you want to talk to. He teaches a class for new officials.

The training I received those many years ago (was it only 3 years?) consisted of classroom, and then 1 on 1 on-court instruction during a 5th grade boys basketball summer league. The trainer would run with us, talking us through a call, position us as necessary and then provide a post game critique. Best training I ever received for any task or activity.

Tabletop

One idea that worked especially well this year: doing "tabletop" sessions. This was auxiliary to on-court lessons, watching video, rules/mechanics meetings. Large piece of cardboard with court diagram magic-markered on it with moveable R and U tokens to demonstrate positioning for throw-ins, free throws, press coverage, timeouts, PCA's etc. Those kinda things sometimes take more time than available if only done on-court, so we packed a lot of learnin' into a short amount of time with the "tabletop."
If you try it, I'd be interested to know your comments on it.
