I was taught to signal the violation, point to the spot, and use a the hand and arm signal similar to the "lane violation." But, never the travelling signal!

Yes (if I'm visualizing your description correctly)....

point to the spot and sweep the hand away form that spot.

It just amazes me that an official at this level signals a travel here. It just further perpetuates the myth.

Somebody must have read this thread and saw the clip, cause the same call was made in the Cincinnati v. Florida State game...with the correct accompanying signal haha

The older officials at the NCAA level are accustomed to using their own mechanics, frankly, because they can get away with it. Some of them are helpful, others not so much.
