Oklahoma-Purdue
Unfortunate play with the inadvertant whistle. I'm sure Mike Stephens would have loved to have that one back. But what I don't understand is, how could all three officials allow the Purdue coach to berate them for a good 30 straight seconds while the final two Oklahoma free throws were being shot? You could even tell on TV that he dropped a coulpe of f-bombs. I thought officials were supposed to be cracking down on sideline behavior? Even Mr. ESPN, Tim Higgins, let it all go. What gives?

I did not see or hear the F bomb. I recorded and played at very loud volume. Made the wife not real happy.
I am sure that he was given a lot of leeway at the end of the game. They knew that they blew it. I think that he may have been looking for a T. He was in the coaching box as well. Same ref called the intentional as well as the IW. Interesting thing is that Purdue had an inadvertant whistle in another NIT game. |

I clearly heard the Purdue coach say "You effing took the game" and "That's effing weak" ... Right after that, ESPN seemed to turn off or at least turn down the microphone closest to him. But they did keep the camera on him and you could tell he was still screaming at Stephens.
Obviously, there was a bad call on the inadvertant whistle and as an official you should expect to take some gruff about it. But that behavior by the Purdue coach HAS to be penalized. Just because he may be looking to get a technical doesn't mean that you shouldn't give him one. |
