Unsporting T at end of 1st half.
Had this in my game tonight and not sure we handled it correctly.
End of 2nd quarter A1 shoots misses and A2 rebounds and scores as time expires. Basket counted good. As ball comes through the net B1 spikes it volleyball style into the ground and it bounces hard off the ground and bounces into the bottom of the backboard. I'm L table side and call the unsporting T on B1. We administer the 2 free throws prior to the teams heading to the locker room and start the 2nd half with alternating possession. The possession arrow was toward A so either way they were going to start the half with the ball. Should the throw-in have been an alternating possession throw-in or as a penalty from the T? Please give a rule reference if you have it. Thanks. |

Rule 5, Section 6, Article 2
Exception: 3. If a foul occurs so near the expiration of time that the timer cannot get the clock stopped before time expires or after time expires, but while the ball is in flight during a try or tap for field goal. The quarter or extra period ends when the free throw(s) and all related activity have been completed. No penalty or part of a penalty carries over from one quarter or extra period to the next, except when a correctable error, as in 2-10, is rectified. No free throw(s) shall be attempted after time has expired for the fourth quarter or any extra period, unless the point(s) would affect the outcome of the game. The bold was my emphasis. The technical foul was part of the related activity. You handled the play correctly.

Sorry APG, I don't agree.
5.6 Comment B If a technical foul occurs after the ball has become dead to end a quarter, the next quarter is started by administering the free throws. This applies even when the foul occurs after the first half has ended. It also applies when the foul occurs after the second half has ended, provided the score is tied. If the score is not tied, the free throws are administered unless the outcome of the game will not be affected. If the outcome is not already decided, the free throws are attempted immediately as if the foul had been a part of the fourth quarter. In this case, if any overtime period is necessary, it will start with a jump ball. The division line throw-in following the technical foul cannot be carried over to the overtime as the fourth quarter ended with the last free throw. (5-6-4) You should have administered the free throws to start the 3rd quarter and then given the ball to A for a non-AP throw in. Team A should have kept the arrow.

Agreed based on what I see, assuming the T was called after time had expired....However, if the T was called prior to time expiring AllPurpose's ruling is correct.

Yep, the 2 FTs should have been shot after the halftime was over and the throw-in administer as part of the T. No AP throw-in nor do you switch the arrow.

They do both matter, as there can be a try when the horn sounds without the ball being in flight, I believe.

Ball rolling around the rim....it is not technically in flight at that point.
Or could he be talking about a player who is fouled, while still holding the ball after starting the try (continuous motion), but before the horn such that they are still holding the ball at the time the buzzer sounds.

So basically, since the T occurred after the period ended, the free throws start the next period. If the T had occurred before time expired, even if the timer couldn't get the clock stopped in time before the horn went, the free throws should happen immediately. Yes?
