I attended the Delaware State/Charlotte game on Dec. 30. Early in the 1st half, a Charlotte player was assessed a "T" for slapping the backboard following a dunk. Delaware State shot 2 free throws and the game proceeded. No team foul was assessed to Charlotte, and no personal foul was given to the offending Charlotte player. I talked with the person who posts fouls on the scoreboard in the arena after the game, and he said the official scorer, who appearantly has 17 years of experience, told him that the "T" didn't count either towards the team foul count, or towards that players' personal foul count. I know in HS this type of "T" would be unsporting, and both the team and the player would accrue a foul. Is this not the case in NCAA?

Thanks in advance/

The experienced official scorer was indeed correct. It's an indirect T, which does not count toward the team total or toward the player's 5 fouls to be DQ'd.

So, if a woman slaps the backboard, it's an indirect T?

I'm just glad to hear that it was called.

But would this necessarily be an "unsportsmanship" T or just a T. Minor point but I am curious as I don't think of this as anything more than a T.

Say....isn't there a term for when a woman slaps something....?

Maybe JR can help out when he checks in...

Dan, don't need JR, since my grandmother told me this a long time ago. If the recipient is under 18 and the legal ward of the woman, it's called discipline. If the relationship is, shall we say, otherwise, it's called porn.

Ron, in NCAA slapping the backboard would be an indirect technical and indirects are never for unsporting behavior. Unsporting technicals are directly charged to the offender. An unsporting T counts as a team foul and toward the offenders 5 fouls for being DQ'd. As I noted above, an indirect T doesn't count against the players 5 or toward the team total.

In HS, unsporting fouls are mentioned (as opposed to delay technicals, for example), but the distinction is irrelevant as the penalty for each technical is the same (unless judged to be flagrant).

Slapping your cousin Rich?
Slapping your cousin in a ditch?
Slapping your cousin with a hitch?
Slapping your cousin in a niche? (depending on how it's pronounced, of course)
Slapping your cousin on the pitch?
Slapping your cousin, the witch?
Slapping your cousin, who has an itch?
Slapping your cousin, then sewing a stitch?

Hey, if Mike Myers and Jim Carrey didn't apologize, why should you?
