whistle to end period

Is it required that an official blow their whistle at the same time the horn goes off at the end of every period in a NFHS contest?

No...if there is a pending shot, the horn will of course go off, but we should hold our whistle until the try attempt ends. I'm sure there are plenty of other examples where we would hold our whistles.

In games I work, there's a whistle by the covering official at the end of every period. The period ends by rule, however.

Substitute pending for a try in flight.
We're officials not accountants

Okay okay, let me rephrase. If the shot attempt by a legal player has been released before the horn goes off, the horn will of course still go off, but the officials should not blow air into their whistles until the try attempt has ended.

I think thats what fullor was getting at. FTR, even if we accidentally hit the whistle while the try is in flight & after the horn goes off, the basket still counts if it goes.

What mechanic do you use when the horn sounds? I never know what to do with my hands. If there is a buzzer try I usually just do the "no good" signal, but do I even need to do that?

Honestly, I have never heard anyone care but on a place like this. That is what I do and never been told not to.

Peace
