She threw a shoe
Ok, she only came out of a shoe. She did it in the first quarter of a GV game just after she received an uncontested throw in. Stepped wrong and the high-top came right off. Coach asked me to use an official's time-out so she could put her shoe on. I declined, but should I have? Is there any rules coverage for this? At this point she still had all her time-outs, but didn't want to burn one of hers for a shoe. Due to no real action on the ball and in the interest of safety, should I have just whistled it and allowed her to put it back on?

For NCAA, last I checked, the answer was definitely no officials' time out for this. I know there's not a HS case play for it, so I'd lean toward no officials' time out for this in HS, either.

I'm not stopping play for that....especially at the high school level.

I see this as a learning experience. Tie your shoe tighter next time.
Last year, I had a weird one in this realm. As soon as A-1 made a throw-in to A-2, Coach A says to me, "Stop the clock. There's a shoe untied." I gave him a few seconds of a you're-kidding-me look, and moved on. That said, it's interesting that we can remove a player for an untucked shirt, but not for footwear malfunction. |

All Rise and Bow Your Heads for a Moment of Silence
Moments like this are sad, especially when "a sole was lost" during the middle of a simple athletic contest.

Today's history lesson.
My basketball officiating library starts with the 1971-72 season, but I do have a copy of the National Basketball Committee of the United States and Canada 1963-64 Rules Book.
note: The NBCUSC is the forerunner of the NFHS and NCAA Rules Committees. If one read the NFHS Basketball Handbook, one will see that there is a reference to an editorial change made in the 1963-64 Rules Book that the provision that allowed an official to stop the game or prevent a Dead ball from becoming a Live ball so that a player could tie his shoe had been removed. The reason for the removal was that officials were not longer to do it. When the NBCUSC split into the NFHS and NCAA Rules Committees this rules change carried over into the two new rules sets.
