NBA Rule Question

APG seems to be the resident NBA expert...

A1 drives to the basket and puts up a shot. B1 gets a piece of it. The ball bounces on top of the backboard twice, but does not go completely over, before falling into the basket.

The officials waved off the basket, and gave the ball to Team B. Assuming the whistle was for an OOB violation, they missed the deflection by B1, but that aside, is the rule concerning the ball going over the backboard the same as NFHS/NCAA?

Saw the play...it was a missed call. Five sides of the backboard are inbounds and only the back of the backboard is OOB. It should have been Portland's ball at the free throw line extended.

Thought you might be watching this game. Free throw line extended??? Really??? Even though the nearest spot would be on the end line?

The only time the ball is inbounded on the baseline is if the ball goes directly out of bounds on the baseline (hits OOB on the baseline), the ball hits the base of the basket, beginning of the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters, after a goaltending violation, or if a throw-in originates on the baseline, and the throw-in team commits a throw-in violation...the defense would get their throw-in at the original spot.

In this case, since the ball went directly over the top of the backboard, it would be at the FT-line extended.

Actually, I should correct myself...going back and looking at the play, it appeared that the ball never went over the top or touched anything on the top...so it should not have been an OOB violation...but since they went with that call, they should have awarded it to Portland at the FT-line extended.

If they had realized it wasn't OOB, it would be considered a suspension of play (inadvertent whistle) with no team in control of the ball...thus they would jump the ball at center court between any two players in the game at the time with a new 24 on the clock.
