Help a 1st year out... T's & intentionals
NFHS...
Situation A: Ball is live in team A's possession and player B1 shoves A1 - neither who have the ball or are in a play for the ball or position - for no apparent reason. Situation B: Same as above only contact happens after ball was whistled dead for an infraction or a foul. Situation C: Same as Situaton B above (dead ball situation), only A1 had possession of the ball, and B1 was making attempt at the ball when the contact/shove occurred. What's the correct call in each? Rules references too would help! I've seen each of the above more than once in middle school competitions. Thanks in advance!! |

A: HTBT, but it sounds like an intentional foul.
B: Technical foul at least, could be flagrant. C: Same as B. Nobody has possession of a dead ball.

Intentional foul...you can't call a technical foul for live ball contact ...but you can certainly call a technical foul DURING a live ball. Last edited by RookieDude; Tue Dec 13, 2011 at 01:31pm. |

B: covering official must judge whether the contact is excessive (intentional technical foul or flagrant technical foul) or not ("knock it off"); in the latter case the rules say "contact is ignored," but it probably needs to be addressed informally at least. C: there's no such thing as "making an attempt" at a dead ball, so that can't make any difference; the answer is the same as B.

You can call a technical foul during a live ball, but NOT, as APG stated for live ball contact. This thread is about when contact is a personal or technical foul. Your post is introducing a different (and possibly confusing) element to the discussion.

Bird Dog - If you are looking for difference between Technical and Common, Intentional, and Flagrant, here's a quick breakdown.
Technical Foul - Non-contact live ball or a dead ball foul. Fouls involving live ball contact are either common, intentional, or flagrant As previously stated, contact during a dead ball can be ignored unless you rule it intentional or flagrant. There's more, but these are the basics.
