Comm. College Scrimmage

The assigner for the Community College association that I work for expects each of his officials to do at least two unpaid scrimmages prior to the season starting. Yesterday four officials worked six, 30-minute games as four teams scrimmaged against each other. We were running the court from 11:00am until 3:30pm. But hey, they did provide us each with one bottle of water.

Just got 3 more added. Most are 3 crew games, which when the cutbacks are considered, is pretty good.

Prepping for Official Start

Misc. MS games with rookies and upcoming rookies day camps prior to first assignments the beginning of the month.
One woeful prospect looms large -- shift picks for our department at work determine our work schedule for the new year. I'm low on the totem pole here so the likelihood of having to work the second half of the week instead of the first half of the week is running about 25%. With a good V officiating schedule set on nights when I don't have to work late the days I work (get out at 6:30) now, if I get shifted to the other shift I'll have to bail on the entire year. Hope it doesn't come to that.

I feel your pain Freddy. I'm 5 years in with my association and was the "go to" guy for sub-varsity mainly because I worked out of my house and was flexible in terms of assignment. Started a new job with a very long commute and now can only do varsity during the week (and I'm just in transition from SV to V so I don't expect anything close to a "full" schedule - also had to speak to my new boss about leaving around 4 to get to those weekday games). I did speak to both assignors and told them to load me up on sub-varsity on the weekends but we'll have to see how things shake out.

Stop eating inflammation causing foods and within 4 to 6 weeks you will not have to ingest chemical inflammation suppressors to be able to referee.

If the scrimmage is expected to go more than six quarters, i.e. a jamboree, then the host school must make special fee arrangements with our commissioner.

Our state interscholastic sports governing body actually encouraged officials in all sports to get paid for scrimmages because some sports were unable to get any scrimmage officials at all (field hockey, lacrosse, etc.).

Schools that do want assigned officials for their scrimmages can contact individual officials, and arrange any fee, including no fee; gas, laundry, and lunch money; a T-shirt; or lunch (grinders, pizza).
Our scrimmages usually pay as well as a game. I was offered one that pays $75 when our normal game fee is $60, but I had to turn it down because I'm working a clinic as a clinician. Rumor has it the $75 scrimmage is going to last about 3 hours, though.

I do work the occasional free scrimmage and it's not really a consideration when I accept or decline -- but if they're paying, I'm taking.

I won't walk onto a court until the 19th. First game isn't until the 26th. I can use the break after a long baseball season followed immediately with a football season. Between November 26th and March 1st, I'll work about 60-65 HS/college dates, which is more than enough for me.

We are required to work one free scrimmage as it counts toward our training hours to become/stay certified
