Shot clock reset

The shot clock is at 11. A1 attempts a legal dunk. The ball NEVER hits the rim. The ball, while in the net, hits the dunker's head and pops back upward, out of the cylinder, again, never hitting the rim. Play continues and A2 gains control of the ball. Should the shot clock be reset? Rule reference?

What you really have in this case is basket interference for touching the ball while it was within the basket.

Assuming it has not hit the player's head but came back out on it's own...

While it may not have contacted the rim, that would be some pretty serious hair splitting as far as the shot clock goes. If it is inside the basket, I think most would consider it to have hit the rim and reset the clock. If it was in the basket, it would be pretty difficult for it to come back out all without ever contacting the rim.

by rule (NCAA-M), the shot clock would only reset when the ball hits the rim during a shot or a basket is scored. in the OP, you have neither...the shot clock should not be reset.

now, in reality, the shot clock will be reset and the game will continue and nobody will stop the game to correct the clock.

too often when A1 throws an alley-oop pass that hits the rim or whenever the ball hits the rim and it is not a shot attempt...the clock gets reset and the game continues...

in NCAA-M the rule requires the shot clock operator to judge whether a legal shot attempt occurred (then reset when hits rim) or not (no reset even if ball hits the rim).

they should change this rule to NBA rule which is simple...ball hits rim (no matter how - shot, pass, deflection, etc.) = shot clock reset.

Yup. So yes, you should have a reset, because the defensive team will be getting the ball after the violation.

Why? The shot clock is there to ensure that a try is put "on goal". Why reward a team for failing to do that?

More specifically, any ball that strikes the basket ring, from the playing court, of the team in possession of the ball.

One could argue that it would lead to greater consistently. But in reality, this isn't an issue that needs to be addressed by a rule change.
