I was so pissed off when the Duke/Florida game got pre-empted by the other game and even more pissed when they wouldn't show the last 5 minutes of that game. I do believe the other game wasn't even close either. I forget which one was broadcasted favorably but that just goes to show you what the average viewer(myself) would prefer to see. I remember now(Tulsa/Miami), give me a break. Can anybody make sense of their choosing which one they will show? I was all geared up to see a high profile game not some game where there really isn't a standout group of preformers. Then on top of that they did it again NC/Tenn in contrast to SH/OSU. I think the ratings will be down come final 4 time!

Where do you live ? I beleive that has alot to do with it, I live in New York, the games you wanted to see were being played here in Syracuse, they were the ones we saw on TV. I'm assuming they televised the games being played in the region nearest to you.

I read comments from the NCAA a few years ago on this subject. I think it was in Sport Magazine, but I'm not sure. The decision to show which games in which areas are a combination of three things (in this order):

1) geographical proximity of the venue
2) balancing of markets to give regional advertisers an equal representation
3) requests from local affiliates

Back when NFL telecasts were more regionalized, I think they used the same formula, at least that's what someone from one of the local stations told me.

Conspicuous by its absence is the criteria "What the fans want".

Hey RonJay, yes the Duke/Florida game was an outstanding one. However, if you have not seen Tulsa play then you have not seen an outstanding team.
The best way to see them all is to move to Las Vegas and go to a casino where we see all of the games. And we have basketball 9 months of the year.

Loved Tulsa. Tulsa is the kind of team you have gotta like. They play like a TEAM (4 guys with over 100 assists) I'm in NC and have never seen them play. Tulsa got some tough calls against them down the stretch. They came awful close to the final four.

Well, I'm currently in Korea serving the last end of my 1 year tour and believe it or not they have decent cable over here now. But I don't know what region this would classify as because there are 3 AFN networks, Atlantic, Pacific and Korea and all 3 broadcast the same game so go figure. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey Mark, you seem to be on top of most subjects that I've read in the discussions and this one too. Thanks for that bit of knowledge and thanks for the feedback.

You know you are right about them but I am sort of biased against WAC teams because I have resided in El Paso most of my career and have a sour taste in my mouth from the talent in that town and the conference. Don't get me wrong, there are some good players but I am a East coast fan by origin (Temple) and always will be. I've been to Vegas by the way but too much sports can burn one out. Thanks for the feedback nonetheless.

You are absolutely correct about them. But I guess I'm a little crazy about Pepe Sanchez awesome court awareness. Never seen anybody like him accept Ernie DeGregorio back in the day when every game was exiting. Now days all you notice is players going one on one carrying the ball right in front of everybody and the refs don't call it. Has the game evolved to allowing every violation to be committed and all of this deliberate contact going unattended to by every official? I wonder what ever happened to moving ones feet on defense. Players get ridden like horses now adays and ball handlers carry the ball with no regard for the officials. Lets start encouraging our fellow officials to call that stuff and put a stop to it for it is out of control as we speak. I am a ball player from the 70s/80s and 90s and I never practiced or played that way and contributed to every team in a positive way. I guess if you are allowed to get away with it, it is legal but as soon as I call it you got folks yelling let the kids play. I refuse to let them play that way and hope most others will do the same.

At least here (Chicago), we were allowed to "vote" on which games to watch. The station "chose" the games involving Illinois and DePaul, but let viewers vote on the others (Illinois and DePaul would ahve won anyway).

I agree with you 100%. Players today just try to beat you off the dribble, palm the ball incessantly and don't even seem to look for the open man. I'm a PC alumnus -- saw Ernie D play. But I've gotta tell you they used to call him the second Jimmmy Walker...I roomed with Walker for 3 years ...he was the real thing....one of the greatest college players ever... sure wish Providence would get another Walker type player....

Hey Jack, Jimmy Walker was a Piston Right? Well from what I remember he was a shooter. I can't remember him at PC but ole Marvin Barnes was rough. Do you know where I could order some vintage Maravich tapes or any human highlight for that matter. I'm just ole school all the way. I may have registered for the wrong discussion group perhaps for my desire to recall the real playas but most of the folks I assume are very experienced officials. I'm not but I'm learning fast. And calling ball in El paso this season should get me to the varsity level with a little under 4 years of experience.

Yes he played for Detroit. Then Houston and KC -- allstar several times but never made impact in NBA I thought he would. You probably remember Walker as a shooter because he led nation in scoring his senior year. But he was forced into shouldering the bulk of the scoring because our center didnt apply himself in school and never played past his soph year. Tough to win without a good center. Walker was a GREAT passer and told me numerous times his junior and senior year he preferred to score less and pass off but coach (Joe Mullaney) wanted him to score. Prime example ... one team tried to box and one and even triangle and one him ...so he passed off and had 18 assists for the game...only scored 6 points but we WON. His soph year he did EVERYTHING -- I remember a pass he made against St. Bonaventure where he drove the lane, left the floor from the foul line, did a 360 and dished the ball off to our center under basket on right side for a thunderous dunk. Pass brought the house down. Those were the exciting times you talked about. They called him the "Oscar Robertson of New England".

I've only been refing for 3 years.....actually this was my 4th year...moved from upstate NY to Greensboro, NC this year and had to get used to 3 man rotation. Been doing frosh and some JV. Hope to do varsity in another 3 years. Not gettin any younger.
Good luck in your refing career. I've never regretted getting involved even with all the complaining from fans, coaches. Also got some kudos along the way on my refing which is nice to hear.

Just trying to be conseravative in my estimate. Haven't attended any camps yet -- family obligations. But if you think it would really accelerate my development, please let me know your experience with camps. Can anybody recommend a good camp in the Greensboro or Raleigh-Durham area?

Thanks for any help or advice.

Jack
