He said that Wellman did that stuff as a show for the fans and nothing else, and the umpires knew it.  This reminded me of a great anecdote I read from Tim McClelland on the MLB.com site a couple years ago.  It's the second question from the 
bottom.
The image of Jack McKeon yelling and kicking dirt while carrying on a conversation about where to eat dinner is just something that stuck with me.
