Thrower tosses ball to official

I know we've talked about this before and the solutions have been to catch it and throw it back, bat it to the floor, or (my favorite, but probably wouldn't do it) duck!

I believe it was the WVU - Mizzou game today and I believe the official was Jim Burr, although I was watching two games at once, so I can't recall for sure.

In any case, after a basket by B, A1 takes the ball from the net and throws it to the official. The official caught the ball and placed it on the floor right next to him and started his count. What made it interesting was that A1 was still probably 15 feet away or so and had to run over to get the ball and still try to inbound it against B's press. Maybe this happened earlier in the game so the official spoke to the kid and told him not to do it, and this was his response.

Anybody else see this today?

I didn't see that particular play but I did see it earlier in the game and Burr tossed the ball back. My guess is it was a way for WVU to eat up a couple of extra seconds off the clock and Burr caught on to it. Not a bad way to kill a second or two but it can backfire if you do it too much.

I saw that too.

I would say that in college basketball, the players should know by now that you don't need to give the ball to the official after a made basket. I would toss it back once, then after that, either catch it and put it at my feet or just let it go past me entirely.

Players do this when their team is ahead in order to waste time. Don't abet them.

In NFHS, make it a point in the captains meeting?

If that's the case, there can be 1000 points to address in captains meeting.

Because the captain is going to remind all his teammates later on?

If it's really an issue, why not?

My captains take it seriously. They came back one time this year and said "Coach! They said we have to have BOTH feet next to the lane on FT's"

This usually happens in the last minute, and the clock isn't running then (in college). (I didn't see the play in question to know when it happened.)

Certainly happened with more than one minute. Basically just a ploy to get the press offense set up without using any of the alotted 5 seconds. Maybe to let the clock run for a few extra seconds, too. My guess is that Burr caught on, said something, and went with this remedy.

Yeah. Like, "Its the black line all the way around.", and 999 other points to address.
