Correctable Error -- Change of Possession Clause
2.10.6 ... If an error is corrected, play shall be resumed from the point of interruption to rectify the error, unless it involves awarding a merited free-throw(s) and there and been no change of team possession since the error was made, in which case play shall resume as after any free-throw attempts(s).
Can one infer that 'team possession' is the same as 'team control'?

Example: A1 deserves a FT that is not awarded. Instead, A is given the ball for a throwin. A eventually commits a violation or foul. Before the ball is given to B for the throwin, the error is discovered. What next? A1 gets the merited FT with no one on the lane. B1 will get the ball for a throwin at the spot nearest the violation. Team possesion changed at the moment of the violation.

The principle is that once a team has earned "possession" they don't get it taken away by a correctable error. They earn possession by the other team committing an infraction (foul or violation), by securing a rebound, or by getting a steal.

Yes, but unfortunately, not all of them are correct, particularly a couple of the most recent rulings. ![]() |
