False double foul

Needs some clarification on whether this play was kick or nailed...

NFHS

A1 at line shooting 1st of 1and1

A2 fouls B2

FT successful

clear lane shoot second and award B ball OOB on the endline (run or spot depending on second FT)

A false double foul is a situation in which there are fouls by both teams, the second of which occurs before the clock is started following the first, and such that at least one of the attributes of a double foul is absent.

Sounds like it to me.

That's what I've got... 4.19.9 Situation A is similar and supports your ruling.

Keith..... did you have this tonight?!

They each carry their own penalty so I'm not sure about the run of the end line. I think it would be a spot throw-in.

As Keith said, it depends on the second free-throw. Read 4.19.9 Situation A, it will clear it up for you.

Depends on when the foul (A2's foul of B2) happened. If it was while the ball was in flight, then you got it right. If A1 was still holding the ball (even in his "continuous motion"), then the ball became dead immediately and A1 will shoot both the first and second FTs before continuing as you describe.

tjones is right. It's the same as if, during an endline throwin, B2 fouled A2 and the spot would be along the same endline. You would not take away the endline throwin from A, or B would gain an unintended advantage by the foul.

I often wonder how often false double fouls etc get called.

6 years and I've yet to call one.

False double fouls happen all the time. And I'd bet you've called one.

A foul during rebounding action before the clock has started after a free throw is a false double foul. A foul during a throw-in resulting from a foul is a false double foul. (These situations assume that a team member from opposing teams, not the same team, committed the fouls.)

It's not uncommon at all.

jdw is right. I'll bet you've called one. Here's an example from my days in Iowa.

B1 called for a blocking foul as A1 is crossing the division line. After a warning, as I walk past A1 to administer the free throws, he earns a T.

Almost...

You don't call a false double foul. You call two separate fouls, each based on their own merits, that when taken together meet the criteria for a false double foul. A T following a personal foul is probably the most common example.
