Out of Bounds Plays

A player is attempting to save a ball from going out of bounds, he deflects the ball off an opposing player and the ball goes out of bounds.
However, the opposing player was out of bounds at the time of deflection.
Whats the call?

out of bounds on the guy standing out if the first person saving the ball never went out before the ball the second guy.

This wording could not describe the play accurately, as it would indicate the ball went out of bounds after the deflection. Actually, if the deflecting player was out of bounds, the ball is out of bounds when it touches/is touched by this player.

Let's consult The Great Big Book of Everything:

"The ball is caused to go out of bounds by the last player in bounds to touch it or be touched by it, unless the ball touches a player who is out of bounds prior to touching something out of bounds other than a player.

"If the ball is out of bounds because of touching or being touched by a player who is on or outside a boundary line, such player causes it to go out." (NFHS 7-2, NCAA 7-2 is equivalent)

If the opponent is OOB and is touched by the ball, the opponent causes the ball to be OOB. Violation on the opponent. The ball is awarded to A for a throw-in at that spot.

Thumbs up

So its OOB on the defelecting player B even if he's an OOB player?
So if the ball was deflected off the pole or backboard, then it would be out on player A?
Looks to me like player A is basically throwing the ball OOB cuz player B is already out of bounds?
interesting..

Moral of the story: dont be out of bounds. Then guys (or girls) cant throw the ball off you.

Yep....to have it any other way would open an undesireable set of possibilities.

Would Somebody Please Tell Barbra To Shut Up ...

Let's not forget that many years ago, if A1 were making a throwin, and the thrown ball contacted B1 who was out of bounds, then A1 was deemed to have caused the ball to go out of bounds, and Team B got the ball for a throwin. That old, long dead, rule still confuses people today, even those who weren't alive when the rule existed. Kind of like some urban myths, they just hang around for no rational reason.
