Unannounced Rules Book Changes
Two found so far (and it's hard because we don't get new rules or case books in IL this year):
2-5-1 changed 3-4-2d added. Why can't (or why doesn't) the NFHS shade these changes / additions? I agree that they probably aren't important enough to make they yearly memo, or discussion, but if would be nice if they were noted in the books. |

Bob, I haven't gotten my books for the year yet. And I don't have my copy of the .pdf version here at work. Would you, or anybody else, mind posting what those changes are?

A few years ago, IAABO allowed the referee to designate another official to toss the jump ball. This is now allowed per the 2-5-1 rule change that you cited. The 2009 NFHS test contained a question on the rule 3-4-2d addition allowing a school or conference logo/mascot at the apex/opening of the neckline.

"SECTION 5 REFEREE’S DUTIES DURING GAME The referee shall: ART. 1 . . . Toss the ball in the center restraining circle for all jump-ball situations." Glad Bob pointed out the change because I was looking earlier to find what rule set that the referee shall toss the ball. -Josh |

That was changed last season, because I remember discussing it in our assoc. meeting. We have an official that would never be the referee because he didn't want to toss the ball, so we said that rule was put in for him. Now he can designate someone to throw. You really had to be their, funny stuff

This was just clarifying the change. Nothing more to see here... |

I believe the NFHS made this a mechanics change last year, and put it in the officials manual. But the rule book still required the referee to toss. I remember noticing the contradiction and thinking they'd pooched that one. This change fixes that.
