Officiating Literature

I'm always looking for new ways to improve my officiating. As I was going through my mail today, I saw my monthly chemistry news and research magazine. {insert chemist jokes here} I'm a chemist so I think it's ok that I get those types of magazines I then started to think that I don't get any officiating magazines (besides the NFHS Officiating Quarterly). Do you all get any magazines that you believe are beneficial?

I get Referee Magazine monthly. I only ref basketball so only about 20% of the articles in that magazine interest me. Not all of the basketball articles are great, but the magazine does hold my interest. The rules and case plays are good to keep your "officiating mind" sharp year-round.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the precipitate!

"Yes, I'm positive!"

I too subscribe to Referee Magazine and find it useful and interesting. As ZMan said though, this magazine encompasses many sports, no just hoops. However, some of the other articles are a good read and applicable to what we do (game management, dealing with coaches, ways to become a better official, etc.). Referee Magazine also has advertisements for manuals, books, camps, uniforms, etc. if you're looking for other (or new) sources.

Two on-line sources I like are: www.ref60.com - Home of Sixty Seconds on Officiating and MyReferee (if you have an arbiter account).

I've been a long time subscriber to "Chicks And Ammo". I find the articles very informative.

Billy as sad as that joke was I still chuckled a little bit. Because I'm sure there are plenty of people scratching their heads. I had a physic teach in HS that used to tell that joke and people just sat there. It brings back some good memories. Thanks for the laugh

FIBA has a monthly magazine called FIBA Assist, it covers all aspects of the game (Players, Coaches & Team Personnel, Officials). The rule "stuff" may not apply to NF/NCAA officials; though it does have some excellent reading on philosphy and officiating in general.

Do search on FIBA.com - Home of International Basketball for "Assist".

I would in a state environmental/public health lab. I primarily do analytical toxicology though. I also help out with analytical food chemistry analysis for the FDA.

I'm glad that chemist can laugh at their quirky humor.

Referee Magazine

Before getting a subscription to Referee Magazine, look into just becoming a member of NASO. You'll get the magazine as a part of your membership, and the benefit I really enjoyed last month was the hotel discount I received at a Marriot Hotel for being a NASO member. More than paid for my membership several times over. Also some good insurance and other benefits worth looking into.
I don't work for them, only wanted to mention the benefits I've enjoyed.
