I use Liquid Stitch that can be bought at Wal Mart or fabric/hobby stores. It's a super-adhesive glue-like stuff. Spread it out across the back of the patch and stick it on the sleeve where you want it. Set something flat on the patch overnight to get a good hold.

When I attened college in Florida in the ancient days, I was still single and my sister and I attended the same college. She sewed my FloridaHSAA patch on my H.S. shirt and my NAGWS patch on my college shirt.
When my better half and I moved back to Toledo from Los Angeles, and I became registered in both OhioHSAA and MichiganHSAA (I have not been registered in MichiganHSAA since the girls started playing basketball in the Winter) I had my better half sew my patches on my shirts. If you have to wear patches (OhioHSAA patches are not required) I would have them sewn onto your shirts. Patches that are sewn onto the shirt look professional. I never have liked the look of a basketball shirt with a patch attached with Velcro (registered trade mark placed here). MTD, Sr.

Tried that before. I sweat quite profusely, and the chemical reaction between the Liquid Stitch and my sweat caused the Liquid Stitch to stain not only my striped shirt, but my undershirt as well. I tried cleaning it off to no avail. It ended up being a one-game experiment.

Heat'n Bond Ultra Hold Iron-On Adhesive ...
This will do the job, if you desire a permanent bond. I use it to bond American flag patches to my lab coats at work.

Look Carefully At The Photo ...
No it wouldn't. There are no staples in it.

Funny you post that, I actually had a guy on my football crew who packed a stapler just to staple his patch on every week. He even packed the staple remover (yeah, the jaws looking thing) to remove the patch so it wouldn't snag, and he'd be ready for his subvarsity or kiddies game the next morning. Unbelieveable!

Had one here in Nebraska/Iowa that did the same. Been thinking of going the same route.

Magnets do work!
I also went with the magnets this past season. They worked well, and the shirts are not snagged. There was one thing that I had to watch out for. Because of the width of the magnets, the patch is slightly offset from the shirt. The lanyard can find it's way behind the patch. If it does, I learned not to grab it too hard/or too fast. One of the magnets can become dislodged. It happened to me once.
